Talented filly Boom Boom Epic earned a Brisbane winter carnival campaign following her dominant victory at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Ridden by Matt McGillivray, Boom Boom Epic powered home to down Sydney raider All Too Huiying by half a length in the Aquis Farm Ladies Day QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1800m).

The Tony Gollan-trained Red Phantom made up a lot of ground late to finish third, a further three-quarters of a length away.

Boom Boom Epic is not eligible for next month’s Magic Millions carnival and will be spelled to prepare for a Group 1 Queensland Oaks campaign during the Brisbane winter carnival.

The daughter of Sebring has now won two of her six starts and took her prizemoney to $85,400.

Boom Boom Epic broke through for her maiden win at Ipswich in October before finishing second at her previous three starts at the Sunshine Coast and Doomben.

“She’s been very consistent and is still learning what it’s all about,” said trainer Toby Edmonds.

“The penny has dropped with her yet.”

Edmonds said Boom Boom Epic would improve further when she returned from a break.

“She wanted to over-race a bit today when the speed dropped off,” he said.

“She needs to keep her mind on the job a bit more and then she’ll be a nice filly.

“We want to qualify her for the Oaks in the winter and this win will go a long way to getting her into the race.”

Edmonds was full of praise for McGillivray who is starting to pick up more rides for the Edmonds stable.

“He’s a very good rider and should go on to be one of our better riders later on,” he said.

Boom Boom Epic’s win got punters off to a good start for the day after being heavily backed.

All Too Huiying was given every chance by jockey Michael Walker but was a betting ring drifter in his first start since early November when successful in a Listed race at Flemington.

Trainer Gary Moore is targeting the $1 million Magic Millions Trophy (2200m) at the Gold Coast on January 13 with the colt.

Long term, Moore is hoping All Too Huiying will be a contender for the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick in the autumn.
