Betaima has marked herself as a horse to watch on The Road to The Magic Millions, upstaging a field of talented two-year-olds to win the Sizzling Plate over 1050m in impressive style.

The Toby Edmonds trained filly had been to the track on three previous occasions recording a dominant maiden victory by almost five lengths two starts ago, before being edged out by a head by stablemate Champagne Jet at her last start.

The Edmonds stable had made it no secret The Magic Millions was the target for the filly and stable representative Trent Edmonds said today’s win had set her preparation up nicely.

“We’ll give her another run probably a week out from The Magic Millions,” he said.

“It’ll be at her home track (Gold Coast) and hopefully sharpen her up nicely for the big one.”

Edmonds said Jockey Jeff Lloyd rode the filly forward as instructed, avoiding getting too far back against race favourite Eleven Eleven for Gregory Hickman.

“It was a tactical ploy to get her up in the field, we didn’t want to give the favourite a start and ended up pinching a nice break on the turn,” Edmonds said.

“In saying that we knew we had to pinch a cheap sectional somewhere and Jeff did a great job giving her a breather down the back before pressing the button.”

Edmonds paid tribute to the 2K Thoroughbreds syndicate who now have two live chances heading towards The Magic Millions two-year-old race.

“It’s great for Sterling Cincotta and everyone from 2K Thoroughbreds who have been big supporters of ours.”

“They bought this filly for just $62,000 out of Better Than Ready at the January Yearling Sales and has already paid his way.

“They also have Champagne Jet with us who beat her by a head at the Sunshine Coast last start, so it’s an exciting time moving forward for us and the syndicate."
