Racing Queensland today extends its deepest condolences to the family of former champion jockey John Marshall who passed away overnight, aged 60.
Marshall is best remembered for his victory aboard Rogan Josh in the 1999 Melbourne Cup for Hall of Fame trainer Bart Cummings, with whom he enjoyed a long and successful partnership.
“John Marshall was the dominant force of the Brisbane sprints in the late 1980s”, said Simon Stout, Racing Queensland General Manager - Thoroughbreds.
“From 1986 to 1988 John won three consecutive Doomben 10,000s, most notably on Campaign King who captured the rare and highly prized Group One sprint double when also saluting as topweight in the 1988 Stradbroke Hcp.”
The Marshall-Cummings Group One run continued in Queensland when the pair combined again to win the 1989 Stradbroke with Robian Steele.
“Three Doomben 10,000s and 2 Stradbroke Handicaps across 4 years is an amazing feat.”
John Marshall won the Sydney jockeys’ premiership during the 1987-88 season, defeating Jim Cassidy.
Marshall’s son, Taylor, completed his riding apprenticeship in Queensland under Lawrie Mayfield-Smith and is currently based in Queensland. Taylor is the regular rider of Magic Millions 2YO Classic contender Oh Five Glory, for the Peter & Will Hulbert Stable.
