Punter's Guide to Thoroughbred Tracks
Always hard to line up the first 2YO race of the season, however we did get to see 4 of the original 5 acceptors take each other on in the same trial last week. The early scratching of Targaryen Hanover now leaves just the 4 runners, and interestingly all 4 are sired by Hurrikane Kingcole.
XAVIERS HURIKANE (5) was the 1 runner that wasn’t in that trial as he had trialled and qualified back on January 25 in fine style. Trained by Shawn Grimsey he is a half-brother to PRESLEYBEGOOD and looks to have his share of talent.
FROST EN ICE (1) held the front from gate 1 in her trial and set a solid tempo for the ‘babies’ when running home strongly to claim a 19m margin in winning. Trained by the legendary Vic Frost she is a half-sister to 5 individual winners and lands the gate advantage.
LEFT A HUURIKANE (3) is out of the two-win mare Feelin Good Lefty and is trained by Cristina Monte. He is the first foal from his dam to race and hails from the powerful Lefty maternal line. He has trialled twice with the 2nd an improved effort behind FROST EN ICE.
SELECTIONS: XAVIERS HURIKANE (5), FROST EN ICE (1), TARGARYEN HANOVER (2)
LEFT A TERROR (4) started from this same gate over the mile last start and was sent straight to the front, burning hard in a sub 27 sec opener. With a 2nd panel breather he was able to keep them chasing in scoring a 4m victory. He can force the issue here and look to take control from the front.
TORQUE WITH ESTEEM (1) worked across from gate 5 at Redcliffe 2 starts back to find the pocket trail and with the cosy trip arrived for the prize in claiming victory by a head. She was in for the fight last start after facing the breeze from gate 5 and with the softer trip here will be probing for the run.
MACH TORQUE (2) has placed in her past 4 starts with the latest when grabbing the silver behind LIFES BLACK. Holding the pocket trail from gate 1 she secured the cosy trip and looking for the poles here can get another economical trip,
SELECTIONS: LEFT A TERROR (4), TORQUE WITH ESTEEM (1), MACH TORQUE (2)
SUGGESTED BET: LEFT A TERROR (4) to win
MR KALYPSO (9) returns from a break looking to keep his Qld record in-tact that sees him unbeaten in 7 appearances. Last start in the Members Cup he dominated them when sent to the breeze from the 2nd line and packed too many guns. Trialling twice in preparation, he can maintain his record.
TOM ME GUN (4) made the most of his good speed off the arm last start to find the front and was never in danger when scoring a 7m victory in a career best win rate. Only beaten a neck the start prior, if MR KALYPSO has any chinks in the armour first-up, he will be ready to exploit them.
WHISKEY BLAZE (8) will need a slice of luck in transit from the gate but with the cosy trip will be ready to issue a closing challenge. Strong to the line last start behind PARISIAN ROCKSTAR, he was runner-up at his previous 3 and has podium hopes.
PLATINUM ROULETTE (1) was strong here 2 starts back when resuming from a break at his 1st Qld appearance and only 3m from the winner. Forced to work too hard last start, he can be sharper here from the inside gate.
SELECTIONS: MR KALYPSO (9), TOM ME GUN (4), WHISKEY BLAZE (8), PLATINUM ROULETTE (1)
SUGGESTED BET: MR KALYPSO (9) to win
SPECIAL RESERVE (2) will take further benefit from her latest start when 2nd up for the term. Starting fav at her return, she was buried in the run early and was hitting the line in good order to just miss the money. Last start she found the line in good order to claim the silver when 3m from the winner and from gate 1 she looks to get her chance.
AT RANDOM (8) wasn’t suited in the Star Maker Final at Tamworth 2 starts back after landing the 2nd line and trying to make late ground. Last start rom gate 1 again at the Country Music capital he took the trail from gate 1 and held on for the bronze in a tidy effort. With the cosy trip he will be coiled and ready to strike.
ALI DOWNUNDER (6) is on the back-up from Friday where he was coming off the 2nd line when returning from a spell. Taking benefit from the outing he claimed an early season 3YO back in Sept. The wide gate hurts here but he can be around the mark.
OUR DOUG (4) was grabbed right on the line 3 starts back when trying to take them all the way over the Redcliffe 1780m trip. He hit the line strongly at his next appearance and with even luck has podium claims.
SELECTIONS: SPECIAL RESERVE (2), AT RANDOM (8), ALI DOWNUNDER (6), OUR DOUG (4)
SUGGESTED BET: SPECIAL RESERVE (2) to win
ZED CODE (8) will need some factors in her favour here but if able to get the rub of the green, she can finish over the top. This is easier than recent assignments with her latest run a luckless effort when snagged back from a wide gate and her previous 2 were though a Rising Stars series claimed by FAME ASSURED. Just needs the luck to take this.
JENUFLECTION (1) lands her best gate for some time and although never really having the chance to be used off the gate, she gets her chance to look to hold them wide here. Although officially 9th of 9 runners last start, she was running up behind them and only 8m from the winner. From the ace she can capitalise.
WHOSTOLEMYPIGEON (4) was a Dubbo winner 4 starts back and in his 3 runs since arriving in Qld has taken on much stronger opponents than he meets here. Buried away in the run last start from inside the 2nd line, he can throw down a challenge.
MISSINMEMATE (2) found the line in good order here 4 starts back after starting from the 2nd line and finishing 4m from the winner. Settling in a prominent position from this gate he will be looking to claim his 1st start in Qld.
SELECTIONS: ZED CODE (8), JENUFLECTION (1), WHOSTOLEMYPIGEON (4), MISSINMEMATE (2)
SUGGESTED BET: ZED CODE (8) to win
SPIKE BROMAC (6) was sent forward from gate 5 last start and was forced to park in the breeze in a strong mile when fading in the closing stages. Forget his run 2 starts back when he was put out of play, he will need to be set alight off the arm but with the after-burners can get to the pegs and dictate in a tricky contest.
ANOTHER BRODWAY (1) went to the front from gate 3 last start over the 2138m trip and was trying to take them all the way when grabbed late and finishing a 2m 3rd. That was a much sharper outing at his 1st run for the new stable and back to his more preferred mile trip looks to get his chance.
PSYCHEDELIC (4) will strip fitter following his outing from Sat where he was 1st up from a break. His return came without a public trial and last campaign boasted a win over CONVICTION. He can be chiming in late here.
GASMONKEY (5) rolled forward from this gate over the 2138m trip last start and facing the breeze was in for the fight when 3m from the winner. He looks set to work again here but will be duking it out.
SELECTIONS: SPIKE BROMAC (6), ANOTHER BRODWAY (1), PSYCHEDELIC (4), GASMONKEY (5)
PINUP BOY (1) started from gate 3 last start and was unable to find early position but hit the line strongly in the closing stages when 2nd behind ROYAL LINCOLN. Luckless when snagging back the start prior in a Rising Stars Final, he gets the improved gate and with good speed off the arm can look to dictate.
ROYAL LINCOLN (6) will be fitter following his latest start when resuming from a spell and putting them away in fine style. Sent to the front from gate 2 he was never in danger in the 10m victory which had followed 2 trials in preparation for the return. The gate hurts but he can challenge.
GOALKICKER (4) didn’t have much luck last start off the 2nd line when finishing mid-field behind ROYAL LINCOLN. Not far away in the Golden Guitar final 2 starts back she is right in the fight here.
TUESDAYS FELLA (12) led them up in a Golden Guitar heat and set an even tempo when grabbed on the line. An all the way winner over the mile here 2 starts back he will be looking to get a cart home to find the podium.
SELECTIONS: PINUP BOY (1), ROYAL LINCOLN (6), GOALKICKER (4), TUESDAYS FELLA (12)
SUGGESTED BET: PINUP BOY (1) to win
BLINGITTOTHEMAX (1) had been taking on some stronger line-ups in recent starts and then made the most of conditions last start. Despite landing gate 7 he continued to press forward and finding the front justified the red figure quote in scoring in good style. He looks mighty hard to stop from the ace gate.
HAPPY FEELINGS (9) took the pocket trail from gate 1 last start over the 2138m trip and after the perfect run used the passing lane to arrive for the prize. That followed a strong 2nd from gate 11 when working home wide off the track and with even luck here can be in the finish here.
IM FREE FALLING (10) added another minor placing last start to continue a strong consecutive run of top-3 placings. Hitting the line hard last start from gate 9 when only a half-neck away he will be powering home again here.
ONLY ONE PROMISE (4) was 3-wide for nearly the 1st lap at Redcliffe last start when getting forward to the breeze. In for the fight he held on for the silver in a strong closing 800m panel and can find the podium here.
SELECTIONS: BLINGITTOTHEMAX (1), HAPPY FEELINGS (9), IM FREE FALLING (10), ONLY ONE PROMISE (4)
SUGGESTED BET: BLINGITTOTHEMAX (1) to win
