The training partnership of Tony Sears and daughter Maddy is hoping to add another QTIS bonus race to its resume when Kilcoy hosts its first Wednesday meeting in nearly 50 years.

The resurgent Kilcoy club has raced regularly on the provincial circuit in recent times but picked up the rare Wednesday meeting while track renovations take place at Ipswich.

Last season Tony Sears became the first trainer to win the QTIS premierships for both two and three-year-olds since the QTIS concept was introduced nearly 25 years ago.

The Sears’ partnership will be represented by Magic Trick in the Great Northern QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1060m).

Team Sears has again been in good form of late landing a double with Grand Barrail and Exondabeach on its home track at Toowoomba on January 27.

Magic Trick is coming off a first-up eighth to Rockhampton flyer Better Reflection over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast on January 27.

Magic Trick, a son of To Echelon, will carry topweight of 58kgs and will be ridden by Jim Orman.

Magic Trick has started 11 times for three wins and two placings and has earned almost $140,000 in prizemoney which has included more than $47,000 in QTIS bonus prizemoney.

Magic Trick showed his capabilities winning against city company over 1050 metres at Doomben last campaign.

Magic Trick has never started at Kilcoy but Sears doesn’t believe it will be a disadvantage and is not overly concerned with barrier 10.

“He was a little disappointing at Caloundra last start as he had trialled well before it,” Sears said.

“He’s never been to Kilcoy but it doesn’t worry me as he went to Gatton the first time and won.

“The barrier is a bit of a problem but it doesn’t worry me too much as it’s not an overly strong field.”

Sears also has Sertin, an Angela Taylor ride, lining up in the TAB Class One Plate (800m).

Sertin won his maiden over 800 metres at Kilcoy in December before a last start ninth in a Class One (1100m) at Warwick on January 11.

Taylor is a three-kilogram claiming apprentice formerly based at Port Macquarie in NSW before recently moving to Sears on a trial basis.

“Angela is a good young rider but she’s only had about 30 rides mostly at the NSW picnics,” he said.

“Sertin should be hard to beat and it would be nice to start off with a winner for Angela.”
