Maybe less is best.

And former Queensland Derby winner Catcha Lefty is testament to that theory judging by his current form following his victory in the Remembering ‘Peter Profit’ Open Pace at Albion Park last night (Saturday).

The Cristina Monte/Charlie Cini prepared five-year-old led throughout in the 1660m event before staving off the challengers in Lancelot Bromac and Glenferrie Hood in a time of 1:55.5.

Cini drove a masterly race and recorded splits of 26.8, 31.3, 30.2 and 27.5 seconds.

While Catcha Lefty has always oozed class to match his imposing frame, he is currently racing in a slimed-lined shape.

“At a guess, he’s about 30kg lighter than his previous campaign and he seems to be sharper and lighter on his feet. We’re really happy with the way he’s performing this preparation and both wins have been very good.” Cini said.

Catcha Lefty has won 21 of his 42 starts while pushing his earnings past $230,000.

The Village Jasper gelding returned a winner on December 23 at Albion Park in a personal best time of 1:53.3 while finishing a close-up third behind Glenferrie Hood and Our Hi Jinx the following week.

And the husband and wife team are hoping he holds his form over the coming weeks.

A southern campaign is likely with the popular couple eyeing the Gr.1 Bathurst Gold Crown series with Left A Terror.

“That’s the plan at this stage, he’s paid up for that series and he’s won his only trial to date so we’re keen to give it a shot and Casper (Catcha Lefty) will be making the trip with him.

“There are a couple of nice targets for him down there including the Bathurst City Gold Cup, if he holds this type of form, it’s well worth a look that’s for sure.

“He’ll have a couple of more starts up here before heading south while the two-year-old just started back fast work after having an easy week or two following his qualifier.”

Left A Terror is a son of star sire Western Terror from She’s A Lefty, a half-sister to Catcha Lefty.

She’s A Lefty, a talented performer on the track herself, a winner of 10 races from 37 starts while banking more than $100,000 and has also proved herself at stud.

From three foals to race, all three have proven to be multiple winners including the now retired Left To Ponder (6 wins from 9 starts – Paleface Adios Classic).
