Punter's Guide to Thoroughbred Tracks
It could be a big week for internationally recognised jockey Mark Du Plessis, who will line up at today's Beaudesert meeting with four live chances for trainer Chris Munce.
This weekend he will be aboard smart Tony Gollan sprinter Most Important in the $1.5 million UBET Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben, after Jim Byrne elected to ride the Liam Birchley-trained Crack Me Up.
Du Plessis has been in Brisbane since the beginning of the Winter Carnival, riding winners at the Sunshine Coast and Ipswich.
His first mount will be aboard three-year-old filly Epicton, who has her second run this preparation in the Haack Logistics QTIS Maiden Plate (1100m) after spending more than 12 months away from the track.
"I am looking for an improved effort from her," Munce said.
Du Plessis will again team up with fellow three-year-old Helfuchi, after he guided her to a maiden victory at Ipswich last-start.
"She has trained on well since her last start and hopefully she gets a good run on the speed and should be hard to beat again," Munce said.
In Race 6 the pair will combine with sprinter Zoutano in the Barrier Reef Pools Benchmark 62 handicap (1100m), where they'll look ti improve on a last-start ninth at Ipswich.
"He has freshened up nicely and looks terrific and from the good draw he should be able to use his speed to (his) advantage and I'm sure he will acquit himself well."
Munce and Du Plessis will be out to finish the day on a high note with Distroya, which was scratched from the Class 2 (1630m) and will instead run in the Trackside Photography Benchmark 58 (1400m) after a close fourth at the Gold Coast last start over the same distance.
"He strikes a good race here. His run the other day was very good and hopefully he finds a nice spot from the draw."
