Jockey Jim Orman is hopeful Wolf Moon can live up to his potential in a Stakes race at Eagle Farm on Saturday ahead of the rider’s bid for an elusive Group 1 victory in Sydney next week.

Wolf Moon faces a steep class rise from winning a Class 3 at the Sunshine Coast earlier this year when he tackles the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes over 1400m.

Orman believes the three-year-old has a bright future and will acquit himself well in his first Stakes race.

Orman returned from a week’s suspension to win aboard the Chris Anderson-trained Firebox at Eagle Farm on Wednesday and has a near full book, with six rides on Saturday.

Orman will get his chance to ride his first Group 1 winner when the Stuart Kendrick-trained I’ve Bean There heads to Sydney for the Group 1 Champagne Stakes at Randwick on Saturday week.

I’ve Bean There came from near last to win decisively over 1400m at Eagle Farm last month.

“I’ve never ridden a Group 1 winner but I’ve had a couple of placings,” Orman said.

“My biggest win was a Group 3 aboard Niccanova and I’ve won heaps of Listed races.

“Wolf Moon is a very good horse and he won well over 1600m last time, so I’m expecting him to run well again.”

James Orman Next Racing

Wolf Moon has won three of his four starts including his first victory for former trainer David Vandyke at the Sunshine Coast in May last year.

Colourful owner Allan Endrez, of Alligator Blood fame, later transferred the three-year-old to fellow Sunshine Coast trainer Bill Healy.

Under Healy’s guidance, Wolf Moon has started a further three times for two wins, including his latest all-the-way victory when ridden by Orman in a 1200m Class 3 at the Sunshine Coast in February.

Healy acknowledges the step up in class from a Class 3 to a Stakes race but is confident Wolf Moon will run well.

Endresz and fellow owners Jeff and Robyn Simpson purchased Wolf Moon direct from the paddock for $125,000 at Newgate Farm.

In latest TAB markets, Wolf Moon is a $5 chance behind joint favourites Apache Chase and Gotta Kiss at $3.50.
