Trainer Rob Heathcote admits to making an error of judgement with Crymenotears and is hopeful the promising filly can continue her recent run of good form at Doomben on Saturday.

Heathcote, a five-time Brisbane premiership winner since he started training 25 years ago, has suddenly found the key to Crymenotears.

The daughter of Spill The Beans is seeking her third win from her past four starts in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap over 1615 metres.

Although she’s stepping up to city grade, Heathcote is confident Crymenotears can be competitive again with apprentice Adin Thomson in the saddle.

Crymenotears is coming off a last start win over 1690 metres against her own age at Ipswich on March 24.

Heathcote admitted he considered Crymenotears purely a sprinter early in her career until he she won at the Sunshine Coast in early March.

Ridden by Ben Thompson that day, Crymenotears led all the way to win her first start over 1400 metres on the synthetic track.

Since then, she tried valiantly to lead all the way again over 1400 metres but was just pipped on the post by the John Hubbard-trained Kiss My Millo at the Gold Coast before breaking through for her third win in 14 starts at Ipswich.

“I honestly believe I had been training her wrong,” Heathcote said.

“She showed a bit of speed early on and won a short course race and I thought I had a tidy sprinter here.

“But, she’s a half-sister to Matt Kropp’s Tears Of Love, who has won over 2200 metres at Eagle Farm.

“She’s a very difficult horse to ride but I’m hoping her staying prowess is starting to come through.”

Heathcote said Crymenotears was the best chance of his three Doomben starters but she was unlikely to join his team for the TAB Queensland Racing Carnival headed by Rothfire and Startantes.

Rothfire is coming along well since a minor injury ruled him out of The Everest at Randwick and is likely to barrier trial at Doomben on Tuesday week before resuming the in the Group 2 Victory Stakes at Eagle Farm on April 30.

The Group 1-placed Startantes will barrier trial next week before resuming with QTIS Jewel winner Prince Of Boom in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate over 1110 metres at Doomben on April 23.
