Trainer Bryan Guy won’t be surprised if former Perth sprinter Volkoff makes a successful stable debut on her new home track at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Volkoff is a winner of two Stakes races in Perth including the 2017 Listed Miss Andretti Stakes and was sent to Queensland to go under the hammer at the National Broodmare sales at the Gold Coast in June.

Owner Paul White left the seven-year-old mare in the care of Guy, who trains in partnership with son Daniel, after she failed to reach her reserve.

“She’s coming along really well and I couldn’t be happier with her,” Bryan Guy said.

“She trialled very well and she’s done enough work to be very competitive tomorrow.”

Volkoff will be ridden by Paul Hammersley when she steps out in the Matthew Dunn Open Handicap (1200m).

“Looking at her form she’s placed twice over 1200 metres but her best distance looks around 1000 to 1100 metres,” Guy said.

“If she goes okay tomorrow, Paul (White) might keep her going for another season but there’s still plenty of time for her to go to stud this season.

“She could even go to stud in September and race in foal if they wanted.”

Guy said no plans have been pencilled in for the daughter of Time Thief who has won 10 of her 32 starts in the west with prizemoney in excess of $443,000.

“She’s raced competitively in Group 3 company in Perth but we haven’t got anything in mind for her at the moment,” he said.

“We want to see how she comes up first. If she races well there’s plenty of suitable races coming up for her and if she doesn’t then she can go to stud.”

Volkoff is a proven first-up performer with two wins from six starts under previous Perth trainer Gary Crispen.

Apart from being a breeder, Whyte is a wresting buff and named Volkoff after Yugoslavian wrestler, Nikolai Volkoff who used to be a tag team partner of Killer Kowalski.

While Guy is hopeful of a strong first-up performance from Volkoff, he fears Newcastle visitor Dal Cielo will prove the hardest to beat.

“Dal Cielo has got good form around Tactical Advantage in Sydney and his last run when fourth at Rosehill behind Trekking was very good,” Guy said.
