Co-trainer Peter Hulbert is hopeful promising apprentice Adin Thompson can ride his first metropolitan stable double at Doomben on Thursday.

Thompson, last season’s champion provincial apprentice, will ride the Hulbert-trained No Refund in the Kiri Benchmark 68 Handicap (1350m) and Moonshine Lady in the TAB 0-65 Handicap (1050m).

Hulbert, who trains in partnership with son Will, isn’t concerned with a soft track rating for his pair.

“We had a bit of rain overnight and the track is a soft 7 at the moment but it won’t worry my two,” Hulbert said.

“No Refund has only had one go on a heavy track and won and Moonshine Lady has also has won a heavy track.

“It won’t worry me if we get more rain and it would be great if Adin can get his first double for the stable in town.”

No Refund won at Doomben on New Year’s Day before a last start fourth on the same track last month but has drawn awkwardly in barrier seven in his attempt to win for the sixth time in 21 starts.

Moonshine Lady was previously trained in NSW by Richard Butler and has only been in Team Hulbert’s stable for one start when she won a Class Two at Doomben on January 23.

“She won first-up from the outside alley over 1110 metres in her first run for us,” Hulbert said.

“I thought she could win and I was going to back her but I chickened out when she drew badly.

“They bet $15 at one stage and she started a lot shorter.

“I think she’s above average and she did it both ends when she led last time.”

Hulbert doesn’t believe Moonshine Lady, a winner of three of her nine starts, has to lead again from barrier nine.

“I don’t think she needs to lead in this but she showed a lot of toe when she led last time,” he said.

“She can be a problem loading as she was once barred in the south.

“I’ll be asking the barrier attendants to use a rope to guide her in this time.”
