Trainer David Vandyke is hoping premier jockey Jeff Lloyd will delay his planned retirement to team up with Miss Quaintly for a Group 1 Victoria Oaks campaign in Melbourne this spring following the filly’s victory at Doomben on Saturday.

Lloyd, who plans to retire before the end of the year, guided Miss Quaintly to her second win in three starts in the Tattersall’s QTIS Two-Year-Old Handicap (1600m).

The daughter of More Than Ready powered home to down Pumps by a long neck with a further 1-1/4 lengths to Red Stina.

Vandyke has a big opinion of Miss Quaintly who was a $280,000 purchase by global funds management company, Phoenix Thoroughbreds.

“I’ve had three favourites over the last 20 years and have never won the VRC Oaks as yet and I think this filly gives every indication she will stay as well,” Vandyke said.

“I’m keen to get her to Melbourne for the Victoria Oaks.

“It looks a nice race for her and her mother Quaintly never won until she got to 2000 metres in the United States.

“This filly relaxes so well in her races and finds the line strongly and her breeding suggests she’ll have no problem finding a trip.”

While Vandyke has a big opinion of the filly, he rated his former star galloper Yankee Rose as better.

“She’s not as good as Yankee Rose yet but she looks a better stayer,” he said.

“I’ve had three winners for Phoenix Thoroughbreds now and I’ll take another of theirs down to Melbourne with this filly.

“Phoenix Thoroughbreds are a global funds management company who are only just starting to make their presence felt in the racing industry.

“They’ve got offices in Dubai, London and the United States and have had a winner in the northern hemisphere as well.”

Meanwhile apprentice Jackson Murphy landed his first metropolitan Brisbane double aboard San Telmo and Pressway.

Murphy hails from the Northern Rivers but has been based for the past nine months with Eagle Farm trainer Chris Anderson.

The 22-year-old produced a clever ride to claim his first Saturday city winner aboard San Telmo in the Benchmark 80 Handicap (2000m) before winning aboard Pressway in the Benchmark 75 Handicap (1600m).

Before his double, Murphy had ridden six city winners on the midweek metropolitan circuit.

San Telmo may have earned himself a trip north for the Townsville and Cairns Cup following his 2-3/4 length win over Shotacross The Bow.
