Rider questioned re tactics in setting fast tempo - rider stated instructed to obtain forward position which she was able to with relative ease in early stages. When EXCITEMENT LEVELS commenced to over race to her outside she was reluctant to overly restrain her mount as she was of the opinion that this would cause it to over race and be detrimental to her chances. As a consequence she allowed it to stride along but noted it was under pressure leaving the 1000m. Stewards advised rider she had erred in not making a greater effort to restrain her mount during the early stages.

Bumped and unbalanced at start. Steadied near 500m. Eased when tightened for room at entrance to straight and again near 100m. Questioned re performance jockey stated that with addition of blinkers he intended on settling in a forward position however mount was unable to muster speed and settled further back than intended. Mount started to work into a sprint rounding home turn however he was obliged to stop riding when tightened for room at entrance to straight. Horse then failed to sprint from this point and was disappointing in its run to the line. Post-race veterinary exam - no abnormality

Upon returning to scale Jockey M McGuren reported that the gelding was inclined to lay in throughout which prevented him from taking up a forward position. Jockey McGuren added that as a consequence he was caught wide in the early stages and had to restrain the gelding in an effort to obtain cover.

Gelding appeared to slip on jumping away resulting in it losing ground at the start after which he conceded he should have placed the gelding under more pressure to obtain a position outside SAINT HUGO. Stewards agreed that rider had erred in lack of vigour in early stages but bearing in mind is relative inexperience as an apprentices did not believe his error was culpable under the rules.
