Raced keenly for some distance passing the 1400m. Jockey C Spry reported that after racing fiercely in the early stages NICE RETORT was a spent force soon after straightening so he elected not to pressure the gelding over the concluding stages. Nonetheless he was reminded of his obligation to ride his mount out to the end of the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
