When questioned as to the tactics adopted which appeared in contrast to the gelding’s most recent starts, Jockey M Cahill stated that he was instructed to allow the gelding to begin on its own terms and when placed wide in the early stages he elected to restrain to obtain a position with cover towards the rear of the field. Overraced in the early stages. P. Hammersley was questioned regarding his decision to shift out around STANLEY soon after straightening rather than improve to the inside of SCOUTABOUT. P. Hammersley explained that he was of the view that the better part of the track was three to four horses wide and for this reason he elected to shift out rounding the home turn, however, when STANLEY shifted out under pressure in the home straight, he was forced wider on the track than he had anticipated. He added that he had previously nominated and accepted for Ipswich on Saturday 13 January but unfortunately the mare injured itself in transit to the course and was a late scratching on that occasion. He added that subsequent to that occasion the mare had won a trial at Deagon very comfortably and he had expected a forward showing from her today. The explanation was noted.
