Rdr std that appr 400m mount was under pressure & whilst there was opportunity to shift wider he did not feel it was in his mount’s interests to do so at that stage. Add when runner improved to mount’s outside round home turn he attempted to shift out, however was unable to do so when that rnr held a tight line, & as a consequence mount was held up for a short dist upon straightening. Rdr was told better option would have been to shift wider from 400m, which would have afforded mount an unimpeded run to finish.

When questioned re the apparent improved performance of the gelding compared to its most recent start, tnr rep advised it generally is a consistent performer and at its last start ran below expectations due to the particularly heavy racing surface, which was also reported on that occasion by its rdr. He said the gelding had done well leading into today’s race and its improved performance was attributable to the firmer racing surface.

COT: To be ridden more fwd; settled midfield. Bumped near 600m. On the home turn, laid in & bumped another rnr. When qst re improved performance, tnr std at gelding's last start it settled back in field & found it difficult to make up ground on a very heavy track with its big weight, whereas he attributed the improved performance to being able to race closer to the pace, but more so dropping down significantly in weight & with a rdr who has a good association with it. Added whilst he anticipated the gelding would race competitively, it's performance had exceeded his expectations.

When qst, rdr std instr to take up fwd pos. Said when racing wide appr first turn observed three rnrs to inside & therefore commenced to ride mnt along & anticipated would obtain lead near 1200m. Said, however, was surprised another rnr maintained pos to inside & felt was in mnt’s best interests to cont fwd. When qst, tnr confirmed instr. Stwds satisfied rdr did have to ride mnt along to cross rnrs but should have considered steadying mnt & racing outside other rnr near 1200m. Rdr advised to ensure he rides mnts in a manner that allows every opportunity to close off races as best as possible.

The trainer’s representative for the Price/Kent jnr stable was advised they would be required to obtain a veterinary certificate for the gelding prior to it next racing
