When questioned regarding tactics adopted rider K Cowan stated instructions were to attempt to lead however when runners improved to her inside approaching the 800 metres she was caught racing three wide without cover. Stewards, in assessing the ride of apprentice Cowan, advised in future she should show greater flexibility as the race unfolds, and not become too tied down to instructions and thus afford her mounts the best opportunity to finish their race off.

When quest rdr stated that she rode her mount along early to establish fwd posn. Rdr stated app 1000m mount was 3 wide in a line of 4 horses leading. Rdr stated she pressed on when other runners showed intent on taking a sit. Rdr stated mount changed stride near 500m & she was required to encourage it along from this point. Rdr stated mount weakened in straight after tough run in early stages & she did not test over final 150m. Rdr added at last start win mount enjoyed run behind a genuine tempo & only had to sustain 200m sprint. P/R vet exam no ab's.

Rdr reported although mnt raced wide and without cover throughout the event, he could offer no explanation for the reason it weakened noticeably after being placed under pressure rounding the home turn. He added that, on return to scale, he had some concerns with mnt’s action. A post-race vet exam revealed speedy cuts to the near-foreleg. Tnr reported the mare will now be leaving his stable. Notwithstanding this advice, tnr was told a vet clearance is required before next race/trial. Since received 1/7.
