He added it was not his intention to lead by a considerable distance and at a point near the 1000m he attempted to restrain, however the gelding resented this and commenced to overrace and lay out. Trainer confirmed that the instructions were to obtain a forward position.

Wiggins stated that the horse was very disappointing, in his opinion, and despite travelling wide without cover and carrying 61 kilograms he had expected it to run on when asked for an effort in the home straight, however the horse did not respond to his riding. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Pengelly explained that despite travelling wide throughout, he was confident of a forward showing as the gelding was travelling strongly, however, when placed under pressure near the 500m, it failed to quicken on the soft surface and in his opinion this was a contributing factor to the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery. Stewards will follow up with trainer K. Hansen in ensuing days regarding the horse’s post-race recovery.
