Byrne reported that although it had been his intention to possibly lead, his mount did not begin as well as anticipated and was quickly crossed in the early stages and then raced very greenly throughout the event, overraced onto heels on a number of occasions and had to be checked from heels near the 800m and again when held up for clear running between the 500m and the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings other that it had a poor post-race recovery rate.

He indicated that he would have preferred to be a length or 2 closer to the lead, adding that he was obliged to attempt to improve earlier than he would have liked as the horses he was trailing were not able to take him into the race in what he considered was a slowly run event. He added when under pressure from the 800m the horse did race greenly.
