Rider questioned re disappointing performance - stated filly raced very greenly throughout and also resented racing tightly between runners near 600m and was obliged to restrain after which the filly never travelled comfortably. He noted filly had trialled impressively when leading and could only use the excuse it was not suited when unable to lead and when racing tightly between runners. Vetted - no abnormalities - swab sample taken. Trainer advised following poor performance would now be sent for a spell.

Connections advised it would be the intention that the horse secure a more forward position. Attempted to go forward from a wide gate, however, when left awkwardly placed four wide near the 1100m, was then restrained to a trailing position. When asked to comment on the horse’s performance, apprentice B. Nothdurft stated that whilst he was satisfied he occupied a good forward trailing position, and whilst he believed the horse felt comfortable on today’s firmer surface, it failed to respond to his riding over the final 600m. Vetted and found to have cardiac arrhythmia.

As jockey R. McMahon’s arrival on course was delayed, D. Griffin was substituted as the rider of the horse. When asked to comment on the performance of the horse, jockey Griffin indicated his mount raced quite greenly in the early and middle stages after he had been instructed to allow the horse to settle out of the barriers. He indicated that, in his opinion, the gelding finished the race off strongly despite laying in form the 400m onwards. He added that trainer Mr B. Baldwin suggested he would now look to spell the horse

Jockey B .Thornton reported his mount put in a number of awkward strides rounding the home turn and then failed to respond to his riding in the straight. A post race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be making a upper respiratory noise. Trainer B. Smith indicated that he would have further tests performed on the horse. Stewards advised him that the horse must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

Stable representative Mr A. Homan was questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance. He indicated that the stable had expected a forward showing in today’s event, adding the mare had had a brief spell after performing poorly in Townsville on 21 July, which he believed could be attributed to the horse not travelling well in the trip to Townsville. He indicated prior to this, the horse’s form had been good and stated that at Doomben on 7 July the horse had worked hard when ridden forward to obtain the lead in the early stages from a wide barrier. Stewards accepted the explanation.
