Slow into stride. When questioned regarding the horse’s improved performance, trainer M. Callaghan explained that at the gelding’s previous start it was first up following an 8-week let-up and over a shorter trip, which may have been unsuitable for the gelding. He thought that a fitness edge second up today and a step up in distance to 1350m, as well as a drop back in class, could have been to the gelding’s advantage today. Mr Callaghan further advised that he had only a small wager on the gelding and was somewhat surprised by the win today.

Ljung reported that her mount began only fairly and travelled comfortably throughout the run, however when placed under pressure from the 500m the mare ran on only fairly. Trainer K. Kemp advised that, in his opinion, the mare may have failed to run out the 1640m of this race, and he will now consider dropping the horse back in distance for its future starts.
