Sears advised that whilst on paper the mare’s form may seem only fair prior to its spell, in her opinion, it was racing reasonably and was not being beaten by great distances. She added that, in her opinion, the mare has benefited from its spell prior to today’s race, and advised that the stable had modified the horse’s track work program in preparation for this event. Stewards noted the explanation.

Oliver could offer no explanation for the seemingly disappointing performance of the mare which he advised did not feel entirely comfortable in its action on returning to scale. Trainer M. Currie could also offer no explanation for the poor performance other than that the mare was forced to race wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare revealed no apparent abnormalities.

Mr. Sears advised that the gelding has always shown good ability, and he was unable to offer any explanation for its previous disappointing performances. He added that after a spell, the gelding had been impressive in a recent barrier trial which it won by a considerable distance, and he had therefore expected a forward showing today. Stewards noted the explanation.
