Punter's Guide to Thoroughbred Tracks
What is your background in Queensland racing?
I have been a trainer for about 30 years in Roma and just started out through mum and dad. Dad raced and trained horses and I learnt my trade through Barry Baldwin and Kenny and Debbie Waller.
Tell us about your operation. How many horses do you have in work and how many staff do you employ?
I have got 26 in at the moment. There’s enough there to keep us going at the moment, got an apprentice and a couple of track riders. My partner Sandy helps out when she can too.
What do you love about Racing?
Just the challenge of getting the horse set for a race. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a maiden or a cup, just winning a race with a horse really, getting them fit and making them perform on the right day. The love of the horses is what keeps me in it.
Tell us about the horse you have qualified for the final?
Timetus – Career-16:3:2:3
He probably hasn’t produced what I thought he’d do, but he’s been knocking on the door and he’s not far off. He’ll get into the final with no weight and may get a good draw and you never know your luck.
What do you think of the Battle of the Bush concept and what it would mean to win?
I think it’s a great concept for the bush people; they race for good prize money obviously. I think it’s raised a lot of talking points for the industry out this way. I can’t fault it, it’s really good.
