Punter's Guide to Thoroughbred Tracks
What is your background in Queensland Racing?
I’ve been doing it for most of my life, I suppose. I started riding pony club when I was 10 years old. Probably when I was about 15 or 16 I started working in a trotters stable and then I got my license when I was 17. My brother was also into horses so I worked with him for a fair bit of time and was backwards and forwards in between the trotting and the gallops. I spent 12 months overseas with the harness racing before coming home and getting into stewarding. I gave it away after that and walked away from racing for probably 5-10 years. My daughter started working for a racing stable and sort of got me back involved in work and things. I’ve been back in racing for maybe 15 years.
Tell us about your current operation?
I’ve only got Big Tomee and Monashee Lass in work at present.
What do you love about Racing?
I’ve always been involved in horses all of my life and we enjoy it.
Tell us about the horse you have qualified for the final?
He’s a good horse. On his day he’s as good as anything. He’s just getting a little bit old and he’s getting a little bit of arthritis and sometimes he’ll get there and he won’t be 100%, but I expect him to go really good. I’m fairly confident he won’t disgrace himself. He’s got a dynamite sprint when he goes.
What do you think of the Battle of the Bush concept and what it would mean to win?
It’s fantastic, I’m just rapt to be in the inaugural one and it’s good to see them bloody give country horses a go because they’ve got to understand a lot of owners up here buy horses to race down south but they’re not enough. A lot of horses are owned by country people.
