Racegoers keen enough to stay around to watch the last race of nine at Redcliffe on May 23 witnessed a special performance by an impeccably bred horse.

Mickee Cullen, trained and reined by Grant Dixon, started as favourite in the nine horse field and rolled into a gallop prior to the first turn, dropping out to a conspicuous last at least 40m off the pack.

Approaching the bell Mickee Cullen was still some 20m behind the last horse in the field before tacking on as they headed into the back straight. Hooking very wide approaching the bend, the three-year-old started to unleash a strong run finishing brilliantly in the straight to score a memorable victory.

The young gelding is owned by Greg Mitchell in partnership with John O’Donnell, Ross Diblasi and Michael Seymour.

Mickee Cullen is an outstandingly bred product, being by the legendary Christian Cullen from the New Zealand-bred mare English Elegance, a Camtastic mare who has produced five winners including the ill-fated Major Moment (1:54:2, 20 wins, $164,439) and Elegant Christian (1:53:9, 19 wins, $305,199). English Elegance initially raced in New Zealand, winning five races before winning a further eight races and more than $200,000 in the United States where she took a lifetime mark of 1:53:2.

While Mickee Cullen’s great victory on May 23 will remain in the memories of keen harness racing enthusiasts for years to come, he is still very young and looks set for a very promising career with plenty more highlights ahead.
