Edmonds hopeful Tyzone can overcome wide Stradbroke draw

By Glenn Davis

An initial feeling of deflation has subsided for co-trainer Trent Edmonds following Tyzone’s horror barrier draw in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Tyzone is seeking redemption for his second placing to Godolphin’s Trekking in last year’s race but his task was made harder after drawing barrier 21.

He will come into gate 16 without the emergencies, while stablemate Winter Bride drew gate 16 and will start from 11.

Edmonds, who co-trains with his father Toby, has a great chance of claiming a Group 1 breakthrough earlier with Wisdom Of Water (barrier 10) and The Drinks Cart (8) in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins over 1400 metres.

Toby Edmonds is yet to train a Group 1 winner but has finished second three times with Sagaronne in the 2015 J.J. Atkins, Tyzone in last year’s Stradbroke Handicap and Winter Bride in the Railways Stakes at Ellerslie in New Zealand in January.

The stable also finished third with The Virginian in the Stradbroke Handicap in 2017.

Trent Edmonds has overcome his initial feeling of deflation with Tyzone’s barrier in the Stradbroke.

“I was a bit deflated straight after the barrier draw but he’s a backmarker and he’ll still race well,” Edmonds said.

“Had he drawn better I would have been more bullish but he’s still a good chance if he can get some luck.

“He’s flying and his work on Tuesday morning was the best I’ve seen from him.”

Edmonds expects the barrier will force Tyzone - who is coming off a last start fifth to Victorem in the Group 2 Victory Stakes at Doomben last month - to race two or three pairs further back than planned.

Meanwhile Winter Bride will wear earmuffs on her way to the barrier following her display prior to her sixth in the Victory Stakes.

“She bolted on her way to the barrier last run and no fault of her rider she was ridden upside down,” he said.

“We’re putting ear muffs back on this time when she goes to the barrier.”

Winter Bride could join Srikandi (2015) and Mid Summer Music (2012) as the only mares to win the Stradbroke since Capris was successful in 1936.

Wisdom Of Water is a $6 second favourite in his first attempt at 1400 metres in the J.J. Atkins and Edmonds is confident of a good result.

Wisdom Of Water has won three of his five starts and was most impressive winning the Listed Ken Russell Memorial at the Gold Coast on May 16.

“I’m confident he will run a strong 1400 metres,” he said.

“We’ve put a great deal of effort into him since the Ken Russell and there looks to be plenty of speed on his outside with Rothfire drawing wide.”
