Edmonds Derby hopeful to step up at Toowoomba

By Isaac Murphy

Progressive gelding Evolo is looking to use Wednesday's Class 2 handicap at Toowoomba to springboard toward a Group 1 winter campaign.

The Toby Edmonds-trained Galloper broke its maiden last time out over 1350m at Ipswich at its second race start and Edmonds believes there is plenty of scope for improvement.

"He defineitly wants further, he jumped near last and was brave in picking his way through the field," Edmonds said.

Evolo jumps from Maiden grade to Class 2 company and will cover 1625m in Wednesday's assignment, challenges Edmonds is confident Evolo can overcome.

"He's certainly got the ability to get out beyond the 2000, but we're still working with him to be able to relax off them and run on," he said.

"If he runs well Wednesday we'll be headed towards the Queensland Derby."

While the  Group 1 Queensland Derby over 2200m on June 9 is the Grand Final for Evolo, Edmonds has plotted a preparation to have the gelding cherry ripe.

"He'll get his first crack at the 2000 in the three-year-old Rough Habit Plate at Doomben on May 12, before moving on to the Grand Prix Stakes," he said.

Edmonds also had in form three-year-old gelding Stanley Park nominated for Wednesday's race, but has chosen to take the two-from-two winner this prep to Rockhampton in an effort to keep the winning run alive.

Edmonds said the stable had a number of runners resuming at this weekend's metro meets, with performances to act as a guide for winter targets.
