Herbs Heading North

Dennis Picker is headed to Brisbane.

A regular winter carnival visitor in recent years, the Bigga horseman is headed up the highway this week hoping to play a role in the Gr.2 $50,540 QBRED Triad 3yo Colts and Geldings feature at Albion Park on Saturday night.

Picker is keen to test his talented gelding Herbs Hero against the state’s best which includes Victoria Derby winner Colt Thirty One.

A winner of three of his four starts including his latest effort last Friday at Young, Herbs Hero is deserving of his chance in the feature event.

“He’s a progressive type and I think he deserves his opportunity in a race like this and the owners are keen to give it a shot so we’re heading up at this stage.”

Starting as a clear elect at Young, Herbs Hero scored easily taking a time of 1:59 for the 1720m while finishing off his final half in 59.7 seconds.

The Shadow Play – Empty Promises has also registered victories at Orange and Temora while his sole loss came at Bathurst when on debut back in February.

“We’ve been patient with him and he’s now repaying that faith with some good efforts, he was really good at Young and did it quite easily.

“The trip away will be a really beneficial thing for him going forward; I think it will bring him on quite nicely.”

Picker is best known as the trainer of Just Cala, a winner of the 2014 Breeders Crown at TABCORP Park, Melton after starting her Australian campaign during the winter carnival.

Just Cala was unplaced in the Queensland, Gold Coast and Redcliffe Oaks that season.
