Racing Queensland has appointed a contractor to undertake an upgrade to the Townsville Greyhound Racing Club lure and rail system, with preliminary works scheduled to begin on June 4.

The tender has been awarded to Greyhound Track Spares, with the project to be led by experienced engineer Brian Barrington, who has installed lure systems at tracks across Australia for the past four decades.

Racing Queensland General Manager of Racing Simon Stout said the work is timed to minimise disruption to participants.

“The works to replace the current Bramich lure system with a new cable driven lure will take about three weeks to complete anid, importantly, the contractor has confirmed no race meetings are expected to be lost during this time,” Mr Stout said.

The Townsville Greyhound Racing Club has meetings scheduled for the 5th, 12th and 19th of June. A meeting will be held at the Cairns Greyhound Racing Club on June 26 to accommodate the Townsville Agricultural Society’s annual Show

.
Townsville Greyhound Racing Club president Gary Heath said participants and officials alike were eagerly anticipating the new lure system and rail.

“We have been lucky in the past few years because we have volunteers who dedicated plenty of time to keep the lure and rail going from week-to-week,” he said.

“The new system will allow the club and volunteers to spend much more time on club projects that will help improve the quality of racing for our participants and racing fans.”

Mr Stout said the project is part of Racing Queensland’s Infrastructure Plan, which has committed $6 million for Country and Regional racing funded by the Racing Infrastructure Fund.

“Racing is a tremendous contributor to the Queensland economy so it is important that race clubs across the state are equipped with the infrastructure that will help our sport prosper for future generations,” he said.

Infrastructure upgrades continue to be rolled out across the state with renovations to the Rockhampton Greyhound Racing Club track and tower to be carried out in the coming months.
