MEMBERS of the Townsville Greyhound Racing Club realise the significance of hosting a stand-alone Saturday night meeting and have planned to mark the occasion accordingly.

With Ipswich out of action due to the annual Show, Townsville will host a 12-race program featuring the much-anticipated Cairns to Townsville Final.

However, with so much happening in Townsville on Saturday night, including a North Queensland Cowboys home game, the club has gone all out to make the event one worth attending.

Committee member and local greyhound scribe Lee Pearce said not only would the gates be opened to invite the public in free of charge, there would be plenty of on-course activities to keep the whole family entertained.

“We’ll even have a TV running in the bar so patrons can still watch the Cowboys game,” she said.

“There’s plenty of activities for the kids including face-painting and a Velcro wall.”

Lee said the $2500 Cairns to Townsville Final (380m) looked to be the most intriguing race on the card, with chances right across the track.

Billy Bojangles is one of two qualifiers for trainer Matthew McGuire.

“Boxes won’t worry Billy Bojangles (Box 4) and he is a fast beginner. If he gets on the bunny then it’s all over red-rover,” Lee said.

“Apprehension (Box 3) has won out of Box 8 in Townsville before and is probably better suited to an outside draw … place chance.”

Cairns trainer Emma Bryant has three greyhounds in the hunt to win the $1750 first prize, with Tracey’s Hero (Box 1), Spring Polly (Box 6) and Sharhelian Star (Box 7).

“Tracey’s Hero is going for four straight wins but has never seen the track. I think she can handle the box from the 380m, but whether she can handle the first bend will be her doing or undoing,” Lee said.

The first race is scheduled to start at 4.48pm with the last down for 8.20pm. The bar and TAB facilities will remain open for some time after the last.
