Central and northern winter features the focus for Wehlow at Mackay

By Glenn Davis

The central and northern winter features could be on the agenda for two of Rockhampton trainer Jared Wehlow’s team, which head to Mackay on Tuesday.

Wehlow will have four starters at one of his favourite tracks with Only Wanna Sing in the Class Six Plate (1300m) and Onemore Emotion in the Open Handicap (1560m) mooted as winter program hopefuls.

Only Wanna Sing is shooting for his fourth win in succession for Wehlow while Onemore Emotion is coming off a last start third over 1300 metres at Rockhampton on May 19.

“I’d like to think Only Wanna Sing can go on to the Rocky and Mackay Newmarkets as he’s racing well enough,” Wehlow said.

“Onemore Emotion will get better over further ground.

"He ran fourth in the Cairns Amateur Cup last year and it looks a suitable race again for him this year.

“He’ll head towards all those Cup races up here.”

Wehlow is having one of his best years and enjoys taking horses to Mackay.

He has trained 28 winners so far this season and is within striking distance of beating his record of 34 wins set last season.

“I think I’ve trained as many winners at Mackay this season than I have at Rockhampton,” he said.

Wehlow has a good opinion of Only Wanna Sing, whose only defeat in five starts for the stable was when he finished third at Mackay in mid-March.

“He’s got a lot of ability and he’s even better on a wet track,” Wehlow said.

“Mackay is currently heavy and I doubt it’ll get much better.”

I’d like to think Only Wanna Sing can go on to the Rocky and Mackay Newmarkets as he’s racing well enough.

Wehlow bought Only Wanna Sing for $7,000 off Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida and the four-year-old has already returned his new owners more than $40,000 in prizemoney.

“His previous owners wanted to sell him and my Dad (Greg) and Kelly are good friends so we bought him,” he said.

“I’ve bought a lot of horses off Kelly over the years.”

Wehlow believes Onemore Emotion may need to improve his rating for a crack at the northern staying races.

“He’s still a Class Five horse and a 74 rater and he needs to pick up some points to get into the better staying races coming up,” he said.

“He came from Chris Waller’s stable but he only won one race for him while he’s won five in much easier company here with me.”
