Retired speed machine Dam Slippery has put the finishing touches on a stellar career by being crowned the TAB Queensland Greyhound of the Year.

With the 2020 TAB Queensland Greyhound Awards postponed in March due to COVID-19, the Brett Hazelgrove-trained superstar edged out Bago Bye Bye and Wise Misty for the Sunshine State’s top gong after finishing the year with an incredible 27 placings from 35 starts including 13 wins.

The highlights included victories in the Richmond Oaks and the State of Origin, along with placings in the National Futurity, Queensland Futurity and Townsville Cup.

“It’s a really special moment for us,” Hazelgrove said.

“When she won the Richmond Oaks it was a special night at last year’s Greyhound of the Year Awards ceremony – the auditorium there erupted when she got the money.

“My favourite race is when she won the State of Origin.”

In total, Racing Queensland announced more than 20 awards as part of a ‘virtual event’, acknowledging the remarkable achievements of greyhound racing participants across the state throughout 2019.

Having broken the track record at Albion Park en route to victory in the $375,000 Sky Racing Brisbane Cup Final, Sennachie’s barnstorming performance was unsurprisingly named the inaugural winner of the Run of the Year.

The Garrards Top Simbi went to the TAB State of Origin, while the Eleanor Wallis Woman in Racing Award was claimed by Casey Dargusch.

The Outstanding Contribution Award, which was introduced this year to recognise the tireless efforts of volunteers within the industry, was bestowed upon Trevor McSherry.

“There were a number of exceptional performances throughout the year and it is great that we have been able to acknowledge their accomplishments,” RQ COO Adam Wallish said.

“The Greyhound of the Year went down to the wire and Dam Slippery and Brett Hazelgrove were deserving winners.

“With the Brisbane Cup elevated to the world’s third richest greyhound event, the announcement of the Greater Brisbane Greyhound Centre and record-breaking prize money and wagering, it’s a year that will be remembered for all the right reasons.”
