Racing Queensland has announced nominations for its 2021 QBRED scheme are now open.

Having introduced a range of QBRED enhancements, RQ provided a record-breaking $2.65m in bonuses and prize money during 2019/20 – almost 60% up on 2018/19 – with more initiatives on the horizon.

At the start of last month, RQ unveiled ‘Transitional QBRED’ - a new eligibility type for the 2021 QBRED racing season - to complement its existing scheme.

Following industry feedback, Transitional QBRED allows a mare once in her lifetime to foal a QBRED-eligible horse in Queensland, despite being inseminated interstate or overseas by a stallion not registered with QRIC (ie: not standing in Queensland).

The move follows the introduction of ‘QBRED For Life’, which lifted the age restrictions on first and second win bonuses last year, as well as providing $1000 QBRED cash bonuses on all races with prize money under $4500.

The benefits include:

  • $10,000 QBRED ‘first win’ bonus;
  • $7,500 QBRED ‘second win’ bonus;
  • $1,000 QBRED cash bonuses on all races carrying prizemoney under $4,500; and
  • Eligibility to the lucrative QBRED Race Series.

With the recent changes to the Australian harness racing season, RQ COO Adam Wallish said the 2021 QBRED scheme would run from January 1 to December 31.

“QBRED continues to go from strength to strength,” Mr Wallish said.

“With record-breaking bonuses paid out last year, we have made further enhancements in order to support Queensland participants.

“We’ve also adjusted its timing to align with the new harness racing season, but in lieu of the current environment, it’s important that we continue to support our participants through initiatives such as QBRED.”

Having claimed two first win bonuses in recent weeks, prominent Queensland breeder Shannon Price was among those praising QBRED.

“QBRED is probably the best breeding scheme in the nation,” Ms Price said.

“It keeps the horses in the stable for longer and increases the pool of horses that are racing.

“A lot of people want their horses to be QBRED because the scheme is so good.”
