Vic Frost’s amazing eye for quality equine horseflesh more than a quarter of a century ago resulted in a rare milestone at Redcliffe Paceway on August 1.
Three daughters from Frost and Gail Geeson’s grand old 1993 Stonebridge Scooter mare, Niki Gee, were all successful. Two were trained by Frost and the other by his partner, Geeson.
The Frost trained and Matt Elkins driven Feeling Classy justified her $1.80 favouritism, and then four races later Frost and Rasmussen combined to win with $23 outsider, Sweet As Candy.
Geeson and Rasmussen then won the sixth race with $3.40 second favourite, Zed Code.
“It was a great day winning three races, but to have three winners out of three daughters out of Niki Gee win was just amazing. Vic and I are very proud of the achievement. All three dams were by Westburn Grant so he played his part as well. He’s still with us and is a spritely 33-year-old,” Geeson said.
Feeling Class is a 4-year-old Mr Feelgood mare out of Niki Gee’s sixth foal (of seven) – the eight win 2005 Westburn Grant mare, Classiness.
Sweet As Candy is a 6-year-old Courage Under Fire mare out of Niki Gee’s second foal, the 1998 Westburn Grant six win mare, Likeness.
And Zed Code is a 5-year-old Courage Under Fire mare, who is out of Niki Gee’s first foal, the 12-win 1997 Westburn Grant mare, Frostiness.
In 1993 Geeson said Frost paid good money for two mares form the Melbourne All-Age Sale. They were the 1975 American-bred Adios Vic mare, Niki L, and the 1985 Abercrombie mare, Tanya Tabella.
Niki L was in foal to Stonebridge Scooter, and Niki Gee was the result.
Geeson said Niki Gee produced seven foals, all of whom won races. Goodness (19 wins), Judah Ben Hur (20) were her most successful.
“Niki L was also a wonderful broodmare producing 14 foals for 13 winners. We have been blessed by all that progeny that have stemmed from her.
The inaugural winner of this year’s Changeover At Burwood Stud 2yo Classic, Hurrikane Kingcole bay filly, Frost En Ice, is also out of Frostiness.
He is the last of Frostiness’s six foals. She has also left a yearling colt full brother to Frost En Ice and a Mr Feelgood rising yearling colt.
Frothiness’s first two foals have so far proved to be her best. Frostfire (2004 Courage Under Fire gelding) won 13 races while Explosiveness (2005 Modern Art colt) won 12,” the Sleepy Hollow breeder said.
Geeson said she was delighted that Frost was at Redcliffe on August 1 to watch the trio win.
“He doesn’t usually get to the track much these days, but he went that day and I'm glad he did. He was proud of the achievement. Something like/this/doesn’t happen every day.
“It’s a credit to Vic’s horsemanship and ability to spot quality horses at Sales. He's amazing,” Geeson said of the 78-year-old master horseman.
As for Westburn Grant, Geeson also termed him amazing.
“Even though he’s no longer producing he’s still leaving winners, the last being Iamboogie at Albion Park last Tuesday (August 6),” Geeson said.
