Redzel is going as good as ever and will be set for a third tilt at the Doomben 10,000, trainer Peter Snowden has confirmed.

Redzel opened his Group 1 account by winning the 2017 Doomben 10,000 and was favoured to go back-to-back in 2018 before finishing fourth.

The six-year-old gelding then went on to claim a second The Everest in October, taking his career earnings beyond $15 million.

Snowden said the two-time Group 1 winner would step out in a Rosehill barrier trial on Monday before resuming in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes at Randwick on March 9.

"He’ll then run in The Galaxy, have two weeks into the TJ Smith before heading back to Queensland for the one run in the 10,000," Snowden said.

“He’s going super and his work is as good as it has ever been."

Snowden has been a regular visitor to the TAB Queensland Winter Racing Carnival through his association with Crown Lodge and then with Darley.

His first Queensland Group 1 came in the 2009 Queensland Oaks with Purple and more success followed.

“It’s a great carnival and I’m really looking forward to it," he said.

“The Group 1 races have been a great springboard for a lot of our horses.”

Racing Queensland last month announced the new-look Doomben 10,000 over 1200m (May 11) had received a significant prize money increase to $800,000, as part of $1.7 million in prize money increases across the board.

Snowden twice won the old 1350m Doomben 10,000 with Epaulette (2013) and Beaded (2011).

“The new Doomben 10,000 is a really good fit for (Redzel) being over 1200m. If it was still 1350m we may have had a go but 1200m suits,” Snowden said.

Snowden said although there was plenty of water to pass under the bridge, untried two-year-old Mandela, which won a barrier trial at Canterbury on December 20, may be set towards the JJ Atkins (1600m).

Three-year-old Napoleon Solo may also join his younger stablemate for a Queensland Derby campaign.

“He’s only lightly raced but has won a couple of races in town,” Snowden said.
