The Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary in style with a spectacular showcase at Albion Park on Thursday, April 14.

Having commenced as The Gabba Greyhound Racing Club on April 6, 1972, night greyhound racing began to thousands of racegoers at the same venue as Brisbane’s hallowed home of test cricket – Woolloongabba.

Over the next 20 years, champion chasers like Top Simbi graced the grass circuit at The Gabba, bookmakers in their droves travelled and fielded at race meetings to crowds upward of 7,000 people, and pioneers such as Mr Clem Jones held the reins as president of the Club.

In 1992, the chapter closed at The Gabba and the club and was transferred to Albion Park where the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club was born.

Whilst evolutionary change occurred in the racing industry with the introduction of Sky Racing into homes across Australia, the BGRC has carried the torch from The Gabba in providing the ultimate event experience for patrons trackside.

In 2008, the BGRC became the busiest race club in the country hosting 210 race meetings each year, which is still evident to this day.

BGRC CEO Luke Gatehouse said the anniversary milestone will a proud occasion for many involved within the club’s history.

“The introduction of night greyhound racing at the Gabba was a game changer for the industry,” Mr Gatehouse said.

“As the racing and sports entertainment industries have evolved over the years, so too has the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club. Racing from Albion Park is beamed into thousands of homes and venues across the world, and fans can have a bet and watch races on their phones.

“Our 50th Anniversary Night will be an event for everybody to celebrate and enjoy a night at the dogs.”

To commemorate the milestone, the club will host a mega racing and event experience for families to enjoy on Easter Thursday, highlighted by a $50,000 feature race event for QBRED greyhounds, and a $30,000 Mitsubishi ASX car giveaway for one lucky patron.

BGRC will release further event details for members and patrons on the club’s website and social media channels in the near future.
