Well-bred filly Teranga is still a long way from fulfilling her potential but will get a chance – weather permitting - to maintain her unblemished record at Doomben on Saturday.

Teranga will be ridden by apprentice Jaden Lloyd in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap after making a perfect start to her career with a debut win in a 1400 metre maiden at the Gold Coast three weeks ago.

Lloyd has ridden heaps of winners for the Steve O’dea and Matt Hoysted stable and is a strong hope of landing his first win for the pair since switching his indentures to the Eagle Farm stable last week.

Hoysted has a good opinion of Teranga who was sold for $160,000 at the Magic Millions yearling sales in 2020.

“She’s a nice filly but she’s still lacking maturity,” Hoysted said.

“This race leads into a nice race over 1600 metres in a few weeks.

“She’s still progressing and has done a few things wrong along the way but she should get over further later on.

“The winter carnival is still a long way off but even by then she might be six months from her best.”

Steven O'Dea & Matthew Hoysted Next Racing

Teranga is a daughter of Sebring and is raced in a big syndicate which includes O’dea and Hoysted’s long-time clients, Proven Thoroughbreds.

Her mother, Tinto, won the Group 1 Queensland Oaks for trainer Rex Lipp in 2014, as well as the Magic Millions Stayers Cup in 2015 and Magic Millions Trophy in 2016.

Tinto won seven times in her 26 start career and earned almost $1.5 million in prize money.

Tinto is part-owned by Grania McAlpine, wife of Eureka Stud boss Scott McAlpine and Annabelle Raff, who also share in Teranga’s ownership.

The late Tim Bell rode Tinto in her Queensland Oaks triumph and shared in many successes with O’dea when he was training solo.

Doomben is currently rated a heavy 10 but Teranga’s connections are keen to start the filly despite the waterlogged track.

Rain is forecast to continue for Brisbane on Thursday and Friday but a heavy track won’t affect Teranga’s hopes after she revelled in heavy going to win at the Gold Coast.
