An early contender for 'sweetest' win of the year emerged just six days into 2019 when The Candy Man unleashed a breathtaking last-to-first run at the Sunshine Coast.

Even the most hard-nosed punter couldn't be blamed for ripping up their ticket when the Barry Baldwin-trained gelding bombed the start by 10L in the Sneaky Baron Class 1 Handicap (1800m).

See a full replay of the stunning win below.

Sunshine Coast

SNEAKY BARON Class 1 Handicap 1800m

The grey is part-owned by Angelo 'Lucky' Pippos, brother of the late George Pippos, who part-owned champion grey galloper of the 1970s, Gunsynd.

The Candy Man ($1.50), who dons the same colours as the 'Goondiwindi Grey', tacked on at the 1300m mark before comfortably rounding up his rivals to win by 1L.

While it would be rash to compare The Candy Man to the 1972 Cox Plate winner, the win has certainly captured the imagination of punters nationwide.

However, the stewards weren't too impressed with The Candy Man's racing manners and have advised Baldwin the five-year-old must obtain a barrier certificate before returning to the races.
