The Redcliffe Cup will enjoy a stakes’ raise to $100,000 in 2022.

Having traditionally been run at Group 2 level, the TAB Queensland Constellations feature will double in prize money in 2022, providing a scintillating start to the Winter Carnival.

In the process, the Redcliffe Cup will become the only Group 1 pacing event on mainland Australia to feature a standing start, adding an extra dimension to the race, with the prize money uplift co-funded by Racing Queensland and the Redcliffe Harness Racing Club.

“It’s exciting to see the Redcliffe Cup double its stakes,” RQ CEO Brendan Parnell said.

“This will make it one of the richest Group 1 stand start event for pacers in Australasia behind the New Zealand Cup, so we expect it will add an extra dimension to the Constellations.”

To complement the prize money increase – and to provide horses with opportunities and experience from behind the tapes - a stand start season will be introduced, commencing in late April and culminating with the Group 1 feature at the end of June.

In addition to the Redcliffe Cup, the stand start season will also include the $30,000 Group 3 Flashing Red, as well as a $20,000 Saturday night feature.

RHRC President Bernie Ring said the Cup meeting would become a true highlight of the Constellations.

“With the Group 1 2YO Yearling Sale Final already on the card, along with the Redcliffe Derby and Oaks, we’re thrilled to see the Redcliffe Cup run as a Group 1 in 2022,” Mr Ring said.

“As a result of COVID, it’s been a difficult two years, but through the hard work of our participants and club staff, it’s great to achieve this outcome.”

Prior to the Redcliffe Cup, the opening night of the Constellations will also feature the Group 3 Redcliffe Yearling Sale 3YO Final and the listed Patrons Purse for four-year-olds and five-year-olds.

RQ is expected to announce further enhancements to the Constellations over the coming weeks.
