Wapiti was bred by Caloundra’s Caroline Hickey but was passed in when he went through the Magic Millions January sales in 2018 before being bought privately by Duncan.
Love Express was sold for $22,000 at the Magic Millions March sales the same year.
“I’ve always liked Wapiti ever since I saw him as a weanling and when he was passed in, I bought him privately after the sales,” Duncan said.
Wapiti was sensationally backed late to win the Winx Guineas but Duncan declared it wasn’t all stable money.
Duncan believes Wapiti is the better horse of his pair but favours Love Express who has started 11 times for two wins and four placings.
“On the weights you have to favour Love Express,” Duncan said.
“He was only beaten about half a lengthy by Wapiti at level weights and he’s meeting him 5.5 kgs better.
“Love Express ran on well behind Wapiti in the Guineas and has been unlucky at his past few runs.
“He’s had to go back after drawing wide alleys a few times but he drew well in the Guineas and showed what he’s capable of.”
