Waipiti to target Magic Millions and summer carnival

By Glenn Davis

Jack Duncan is hopeful Winx Guineas winner Wapiti can book a Magic Millions summer campaign at Doomben on Saturday.

Wapiti, whose stable nickname is Moose, will clash for a second time with stablemate Love Express in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap over the mile.

Love Express finished third to Wapiti when the pair met at level weights in the Group 3 feature at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago.

Wapiti’s win in the Winx Guineas gave Duncan his biggest win of his 40-year training career and former South African Sean Cormack his best win since relocating to Australia.

“Wapiti will spell after this race and will head towards the summer mile races and the Magic Millions carnival,” Duncan said.

“He’ll be set for the 1800 metre race on Magic Millions day (Magic Millions Trophy) and Love Express will also spell and probably head the same way.”

Wapiti was bred by Caloundra’s Caroline Hickey but was passed in when he went through the Magic Millions January sales in 2018 before being bought privately by Duncan.

Love Express was sold for $22,000 at the Magic Millions March sales the same year.

“I’ve always liked Wapiti ever since I saw him as a weanling and when he was passed in, I bought him privately after the sales,” Duncan said.

Wapiti was sensationally backed late to win the Winx Guineas but Duncan declared it wasn’t all stable money.

Duncan believes Wapiti is the better horse of his pair but favours Love Express who has started 11 times for two wins and four placings.

“On the weights you have to favour Love Express,” Duncan said.

“He was only beaten about half a lengthy by Wapiti at level weights and he’s meeting him 5.5 kgs better.

“Love Express ran on well behind Wapiti in the Guineas and has been unlucky at his past few runs.

“He’s had to go back after drawing wide alleys a few times but he drew well in the Guineas and showed what he’s capable of.”
