Trainer Kevin Kemp has no regrets about bypassing a Sunshine Coast Guineas campaign with talented three-year-old Plumaro who chases successive wins at Doomben on Wednesday.

Plumaro relished a heavy track when she produced a brilliant win over 1000 metres in her comeback at the Sunshine Coast on May 15.

It was her first start since failing in the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast in January and took her record to four wins from 13 starts, boosting her prizemoney to more than $306,000.

Plumaro has also been nominated for Eagle Farm on Saturday but will run in tomorrow’s QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1350m) and will be ridden again by Robbie Fradd who was aboard in her Sunshine Coast victory.

“She’s come back better than ever and I’m expecting her to be very competitive again tomorrow,” Kemp said.

“I thought about claiming when she got 59kgs but the owners were keen to stick with Robbie as we’re hoping he’ll ride her again in a 1400-metre Three-Year-Old Plate at set weights at Eagle Farm on Tatt’s Tiara day.

“The Sunshine Coast Guineas was an option but it’s only a week after her Eagle Farm run.”

Kemp felt the Eagle Farm option suited Plumaro better than the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas over 1600 metres at this stage of her campaign.

“I’ve got no doubt she’ll run 1600 metres but I’m not expecting her to have a big campaign this winter,” he said.

“She ran seventh and was beaten less than four length by The Autumn Sun in the J J Atkins over a mile as a two-year-old.

“She’s a QTIS filly and the money for QTIS is too good to overlook when the carnival is over.”

Kemp is pleased with Plumaro’s barrier four but feels she’ll still need some luck because of her racing pattern.

“She gets back in her races and because of that she’ll need a few things go her way,” he said.

“It’s a big field with a number of chances but she’s trained on well since her Caloundra win.”
