Trainer Desleigh Forster is hopeful she can quinella the Listed Goldmarket Handicap with stablemates Cannyescent and Malvern Estate at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Forster has never won the 1200-metre feature but went close last year when Malvern Estate was beaten in a bob of the head finish by the Tony Gollan-trained Raido.

Malvern Estate hasn’t won for over 12 months since claiming an Open Handicap at Doomben in February last year but Forster believes his form now is just as good.

Malvern Estate has been placed at his past two starts when second to Devine Dice in a 1200-metre Open at Eagle Farm on February 2 before a close third to Jeminzah when stepping up to 1400 metres at the same track three weeks later.

“He’s going good but I would have liked a wet track like it was last week before it was washed out,” Forster said

“He’s racing just as well as he was last year when he ran second in the Goldmarket when he just got beaten on the line.

“So long as the jar is out of the track he’ll go close again.”

Malvern Estate has won six times from 20 starts but has only won once in open company.

Forster was reluctant to split Malvern Estate with stablemate Cannyescent, a last start third to Mr Marbellouz in a 1200-metre Open at Doomben on March 2.

“I can’t separate them and the one Malvern Estate has to beat is Cannyescent,” Forster said.

“He’s down in the weights after he carried 59kgs last start and his last run was very good.

“He’ll be storming home at the finish.”

Jockey Mark Du Plessis rode both sprinters last start but Brad Stewart has had a long time booking for Malvern Estate while Paul Hammersley will partner Cannyescent with Du Plessis electing to ride at Eagle Farm.

A perfect barrier helped trainer Kevin Kemp’s decision to run Mr Marbellouz in the Goldmarket in preference to Eagle Farm.

Mr Marbellouz will be ridden by Dale Smith after apprentice Baylee Nordurft was forced to stand down because of commitments at Eagle Farm.

Nordurft rode Mr Marbellouz for the first time when second to Spurcraft at Doomben in mid-February before winning on the Toowoomba flyer at Doomben on March 2.

“It’s unfortunate for Baylee that he couldn’t ride him again because of his commitments at Eagle Farm but I’m happy we managed to get Dale who rode him at Caloundra first-up,” Kemp said.
