After hitting a speed bump on the road to the QTIS Aquis Jewel, trainer Tony Gollan hopes to get back on track for the big two-year-old feature with three promising youngsters at Doomben on Saturday.

Gollan’s Sugar Boom started a short-priced favourite at Doomben on Wednesday and was expected to make light work of her opposition to book a place in the $500,000 QTIS Aquis Jewel at the Gold Coast on March 16.

However, the daughter of Spirit Of Boom was run down by the Michael Nolan-trained Miss Cavallo who booked her own spot in the Gold Coast feature.

“She worked hard early and was left vulnerable late,” Gollan said.

Gollan’s focus is now on his smart youngsters Ready To Roam in The Emerald Jewel Prelude and Perudo and Niedorp in The Quartz Jewel Prelude for fillies on Saturday.

Perudo is another of the Spirit Of Boom progeny and was an impressive four length winner on debut at Toowoomba on February 16 while Niedorp finished second to Mishani Spirit at her only start at Toowoomba last October.

“Perudo is a very good filly and she won well at Toowoomba,” Gollan said.

“In my opinion she’s the one they all have to beat.

“Niedorp is another good filly who has won two barrier trials going into this and she should get a lovely run in the first three.”

Perudo was a $320,000 buy at the Magic Millions sales while Niedorp, a son of Not A Single Doubt, cost $270,000.

Perudo and Niedorp have been nominated for the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes at Randwick on April 13.

“I’ll just take things one race at a time but the Brisbane winter carnival is just around the corner,” Gollan said.

Gollan expects both fillies will be highly competitive as well as Ready To Roam who caught the eye with his fast finishing second to stablemate Garibaldi over 1000 metres at Eagle Farm on February 2.

Ready To Roam, a son of another boom sire Better Than Ready, was impressive winning a barrier trial at Doomben on Tuesday.

“He copped some interference early behind Garibaldi but he picked himself up well and was strong to the line in his only start,” Gollan said.

Gollan also will have four runners- Royal Hale, Snicki Minaj, Trail Of Glory and Kittie Kins - attempting to qualify for the $250,000 QTIS Jewel for three-year-olds on the same day as the QTIS Aquis Jewel.
