It might only be a midweek maiden but there will be a lot of interest from overseas when Katy Boom strives to bring her provincial form to the city at Doomben on Wednesday.

Katy Boom steps up to 1350 metres for the first time in her career when she lines up in the QTIS Maiden.

The well-bred daughter of Spirit Of Boom is owned by Irene Legg, a long-time client of Katy Boom’s trainer Helen Page.

“Irene has raced horses with me for a long time when she used to live here but she moved to Wales about two years ago,” Page said.

“Every time this filly races, Irene listens in from Wales and no doubt she’ll tune in again tomorrow.”

Katy Boom was a $23,000 buy as a yearling at the Gold Coast QTIS March sales two years ago and has already earned $16,400 in prizemoney.

“She’s well bred on her dam’s side and is related to Real Saga,” Page said.

“She’s been going very well and she’s very consistent.”

Real Saga won four of his only six starts including the Group 1 Blue Diamond at Caulfield in 2009 before heading off the stud where he’s been a successful stallion.

Katy Boom has started only four times for three placings including a last start second to Spirit Of Cherokee in a 1200-metre maiden at the Gold Coast on February 23.

Page gave Katy Boom three barrier trials before she debuted finishing last at Ipswich in May last year.

“She was very weak physically last time in and she’s just needed time,” Page said.

“She was very leggy and narrow early on but she’s developed a lot since.”

Page believes Katy Boom will improve the further she goes but expects her to be competitive in her first metropolitan assignment.

“She’s very promising and we’ll just see how she goes but she might go on to the winter races later on,” she said.
