Co-trainer Peter Hulbert will be double handed in the Canadian Club QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap at Eagle Farm on Tuesday and is hopeful of giving punters some Melbourne Cup day cheer.

Hulbert, who trains with son Will, rates Rebel Rock as his favoured runner over stablemate Real It In in the 1600-metre race.

Rebel Rock won first up over 1350 metres at Warwick two starts back before taken to the city to finish second to the Tony Gollan-trained Purroni over the same trip at Doomben on October 23.

Real It In, a daughter of Real Saga, has had three barrier trials without placing, and Hulbert believes the filly is looking for further.

“I would have to say Rebel Rock is our preferred runner and he should be hard to beat,” Hulbert said.

“We took him to Warwick for a bit of a kill in a maiden and then he led at Doomben and was left a sitting duck in front.

“The plan in this is to take a sit and he should have no trouble getting 1600 metres.

“His rider, Taylor Marshall, reckons he’ll have no trouble getting 2000 metres later on.”

Hulbert said Real It In lacks early pace but is bred to run a trip.

“She’s giving every indication she’ll run a lot further and probably will need the experience” he said.

“Rebel Rock should be one of the favourites and is out of a Show A Heart mare.

“He’s closely related to Prince Lionheart who I trained and he won nine races for us and was a good handy horse.”

Hulbert said he had no major plans in mind for Rebel Rock who will attempt to go through the ranks before anything bigger is looked at.

Hulbert has a team of 14 horses in work at Eagle Farm and will also start Poet Lad in the TAB Maiden Plate (1400m).

Poet Lad has been placed twice in seven starts but has been off the scene since finishing fourth in a 1400-metre maiden at the Sunshine Coast in April.

Team Hulbert is having one of its best seasons and has trained nine winners from its past 50 starters.
