Little known Gold Coast trainer Tom Cowan hopes a win from Catch Me Latar at Beaudesert on Tuesday could be the start of bigger things to come.

Cowan, 56, was a former jockey in New Zealand and worked for 20 years as foreman for trainer Bevan Laming at the Gold Coast being starting Laming’s satellite stable at Cranbourne in Victoria in 2000.

Cowan rode 40 winners across the ditch before having to give race riding away due to increasing weight.

“I had a trainers’ licence when I was 20 in New Zealand before I came over here to work for Bevan at the Gold Coast,” Cowan said.

“I stayed at the Gold Coast to train when Bevan moved his stables to Jacob’s Well then, I went to Victoria to start up Bev’s Cranbourne stables.

“I was with Bevan for about eight years in Victoria before I went out on my own about 14 years ago.”

After a successful career in Victoria, Cowan moved back to the Gold Coast four months ago with only two horses including Catch Me Latar who contests the Benchmark 60 Handicap (2450m).

“Hopefully, he’ll be my first winner back in Queensland the second time around,” Cowan said.

“I trained quite a few winners in Queensland and Victoria but I’ve only had a few starters and haven’t had a win since I came back a few months ago.

“I brought back a couple of horses with me and I’ve got another two since I’ve been back.

“I still ride all my horses trackwork and I want to slowly build my numbers up.”

Catch Me Latar, an Anthony Allen mount, has earned prizemoney in all three Queensland appearances including a last start second to the Desleigh Forster-trained Alcazar over 1800 metres at the Gold Coast last month.

“He missed a run because of the wet and he’s jumping from 1800 metres to 2450 metres which isn’t ideal,” Cowan said.

“But, he’ll stay all day and he’s in the same boat as a lot of others who have missed runs.

“Everyone is probably a bit vulnerable.”
