Toowoomba trainer Kevin Kemp is keen to open a satellite stable in NSW and hopes to kick start the possible venture with a two-State double on Saturday.

Kemp has entered talented mare Sold For Song for the Group 3 The Nivison (1200m) at Randwick while the highly rated Plumaro makes her return in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1200m) at Doomben.

Both tracks are in the heavy range and Kemp would like conditions to improve.

Sold For Song was beaten almost 10 lengths when eighth to Pierata in the Group 3 Sydney Stakes at Randwick last Saturday but Kemp wasn’t disappointed with her performance.

Plumaro is having her first start since finishing seventh to Caulfield Guineas winner The Autumn Sun in the Group 1 J J Atkins at Doomben in June.

“It was a heavy track at Randwick last week and the track suited front runners all day,” Kemp said.

“Pierata ran much faster time than Redzel did in The Everest so it’s a bit hard to gauge Sold For Song’s performance.”

Kemp is in Sydney with Sold For Song and is keeping a close watch on the Brisbane weather for Plumaro.

“Plumaro is going well but I’d prefer her on a better track,” he said.

“She’s been in work for three months and ran fourth and second in two jump outs.

“The track condition will determine if she starts.”

Kemp, 64, has never won a Group race but holds the record as the winner of four Listed Weetwood Handicaps on his home track in Toowoomba.

“I’ve won four Weetwoods and a host of other Listed races including a Glasshouse Handicap but I’m still looking for a Group winner, though I’ve had several placings in them,” he said.

“I’ve got no plans to send Plumaro interstate yet as the QTIS prizemoney is too good in Queensland.

“But I might think about it when she turns four later in the year.

“I love coming to Sydney to race horses and I’m seriously thinking about opening a satellite stable somewhere in NSW.

“Sold For Song is based at Rosehill but I doubt whether I could get a stable here.”
