Even between close friends, up-and-coming apprentice Kyle Wilson-Taylor cannot dodge comments that he was the last jockey to lose on Caulfield Cup favourite Incentivise.

Wilson-Taylor, one of the most promising young riders in Queensland, sat down with close friend Anthony Allen earlier this week to reminisce on their involvement with the journey of the boom stayer.

The duo were the formerly Steve Tregea-trained gallopers main riders during his early racing days in the Sunshine State.

Since that evening at Toowoomba in late March, Incentivise is unbeaten in eight starts – including two at Group 1 level, which Allen likes to remind Wilson-Taylor.

“It was awesome,” Allen said of the experience to watch of all of Incentivise’s replays again with Wilson-Taylor.

“We always reminisce about the horse – going back and forth – with a bit of banter.

“I like giving Kyle heat about that loss at Toowoomba (laughs).

“It is good to talk about a horse like Incentivise whenever we can.”

The hoop’s talked through the experience and thrill Incentivise gave them on his path to Group 1 glory in Melbourne, as well as what star jockey Brett Prebble would be seeing and feeling on the Queensland-bred gelding.

“To come and reminisce with Ant, it was great, obviously he rode him a few more times than I did,” Wilson-Taylor said.

“We compared what I felt and what he felt when we were riding him and to do the same with Brett Prebble riding him too, it was great.”

Between start number two and six – Wilson-Taylor and Allen often interchanged with who would ride Incentivise – with the senior hoop having some direct advice for the apprentice when it was his turn.

“We have seen how good he is now and it is just was a matter of do not stuff it up,” Allen told Wilson-Taylor.

For the 21-year-old known as KWT, the time spent on Incentivise was precious.

“To have ridden such a good horse so early on in my career, it is great and some people never get to ride a horse like him,” Wilson-Taylor said.
