Queensland is poised to be represented in the inaugural running of the $1.1 million TAB Phoenix.

Earlier this evening, Racing Queensland was announced as one of eight slot holders in the million-dollar Victorian greyhound feature, which will be staged at The Meadows on December 18 and includes $750,000 to the winner.

Greyhound Racing Victoria officially unveiled the slot holders tonight, with RQ confirming that a Queenslander would line-up in the blockbuster event.

“We’re delighted to have secured a slot,” RQ CEO Brendan Parnell said.

“We have seen other codes utilise this concept to great success, and we are excited to be a part of The Phoenix from its inception.

“Over the past year, we have seen a number of Queensland stars emerge, including the Tony Brett-trained Orchestrate and Extra Malt for Graham and Leanne Hall.

 “Both would represent Queensland well if they secured a start and we look forward to announcing our own pathway into the event in the Sunshine State.”

The final field for TAB The Phoenix will be confirmed on Friday, December 10 before the box draw held on Sunday, December 12.

In total, 14 applications were made to the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association with eight slot holders selected. They are:

  • Racing Queensland;
  • TAB;
  • Sports Entertainment Network;
  • Greyhound Racing NSW;
  • NSW Greyhound Breeders, Owners, and Trainers Association;
  • The Dogs WA;
  • Ray Borda; and
  • Sportsbet.

More details regarding Racing Queensland’s involvement will be released over the coming weeks.
