Race 5: Rapid Relief Team F&M Benchmark 58 H’cap – 1200m

ROSELLA GIRL – Trainer M. Eggleston was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for the horse by the prescribed time.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by Jockey O. Pickering, rider of  4th placegetter Rosella Girl,  against  SHINSTAR being declared the winner, alleging interference over the final 200m.  After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol video, stewards, in dismissing the protest, were mindful that whilst interference had occurred and jockey Pickering had to check her mount near the 100m mark and considering the beaten margin of 1¾ lengths, stewards could not be completely satisfied to uphold the protest and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings.

At a subsequent inquiry, jockey J. Watkins, rider of SHINSTAR, when leading the event permitted his mount to shift in over the final 200m and then  nearing the 150m continued to do so when jockey O. Pickering, rider of ROSELLA GIRL, had established a run to his inside and continued to shift in to a point near the 100m where jockey jockey Pickering was obliged to check her mount and lost ground.   Jockey Watkins pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding and his license to ride in races was suspended  for a period of 11 days, to commence at midnight, 6 November and to expire at midnight, 17 November.  Stewards when considering penalty took into account jockey Watkins’ guilty plea and good record.
